Setup: Hyper-V server

Problem: On a Hyper-V server and when you start the VM you get an error 12290 like this in log Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-Worker/Admin

‘VMName’: IDE/ATAPI Account does not have sufficient privilege to open attachment ‘\Path_to_disk\disk.vhd’. Error: ‘General access denied error’ (0x80070005). (Virtual machine ID 545CC7B7-83B6-46A9-A29C-29AB56B09306)

Solution:
Open an elevated command prompt and run this

icacls "\path_to_disk\disk.vhd" /grant "NT VIRTUAL MACHINE\":F

for every file or use ‘\path_to_folder\*.*’ if you have all vhd and avhd file in one folder.

Tip 1: If the disk where is stored the disk does not have a letter assigned use a path like this \\?\Volume{257051D9-5AAC-11E0-A741-002264F9308E}\. You can list all mountpoints with mountvol command. In a cluster scenario use Failover Cluster Manager and go to the disk resource and copy the disk mountpoint.
